Project: New Build incorporating relocated 17th Century Barn
Alderbury, Wiltshire
New Build
Type: Residential
Client: Private Client
Project: 18 months
There is a particular kind of challenge in building something that looks as though it was never built at all. This project in Alderbury asked exactly that of James Burton Construction: to deliver a home that met every modern building regulation, whilst feeling as though it had sat in its surroundings for hundreds of years.
The 17th century barn at the heart of the design set the tone. Every decision, from materials to detailing to the way the new structure related to what was already there, had to serve a single aim: authenticity. The team worked through each stage carefully, bringing practical solutions to bridge the gap between what contemporary construction demands and what the client's vision required.
The result was a home that looks, feels, and belongs exactly as it should.
The detail was outstanding, and when costs shifted, he always brought evidence.
After living in in old mill house for ten years we wanted a change and wanted another period property but without the regular ongoing maintenance these older homes seem to come with as standard so I set about designing my own ‘grand design’ I wanted and longed for an old picture perfect cottage adjoining an old timber framed barn with as much exposed character both inside and out as possible but had no idea how to create this so set about discussion with local and national building companies.
After several months of meetings and more meetings our choice was between a very well-known local company and James Burton construction. James obviously won and even though he hadn’t had a great deal (at that time) of this particular type of build he showed fantastic passion for our project and even my architect fully encouraged me to choose James and his team. It was as if he was building his own home.
My experience was incredible and I got to know the team quickly. Always very conscientious and the site was always immaculate which helped my OCD very much. Watching on a daily basis a dream come to life was my favourite thing and the detail that went into every inch of our home was outstanding. We had discussions pretty much every time I was on site and was guided through my thoughts with practical solutions.
Yes, there were cost increases and because of my own vision I accepted these without hesitation to get the end result I wanted. I got to know james as an honest person and his excitement as the house came together was equal to mine. Whenever costs increased, he always put evidence forward to support and likewise it’s important to state he did in fact make considerable cost savings on many other parts of the build.
The team in my absolute honest opinion went above and beyond every single day. They all demonstrated such care for detail which was my goal. The house has aged beautifully these past few years, and you would be fooled to think it hadn’t been there for over 200 years. I would watch the team bring family members to view their Individual work, and understandably, they were so proud of their achievements. It was seeing this that demonstrated to me we were all involved in an amazing project and a completely once-in-a-lifetime build.
Absolutely, I would recommend James Burton Construction, and we are so pleased we chose to work with them. Since the finish of our home nothing has been too much trouble. The snagging was carried out as per agreed and minor issues since have always been dealt with promptly. We have gained further planning to build an oak-framed granary barn, and when funds allow, James will be doing this work. We have recommended James to many of our own clients, and I know those completed to date have been just as satisfied.
It’s been lovely to see the projects James and his team have completed on the piggyback of ours, and each one with its own unique stamp. Well done James.
There is an old saying that if you love what you do, then you will never work a day in your life. James, in my opinion, epitomises this.(even though he works very hard)
